During an emergency!

What happens when your cell phone just doesn't work?  Or, the 911 system is taken down?  Can it happen?  Has it already happened?

What our group does to help
Our Objectives

The primary focus of the AESG is to help the public make a critical connection to the police, fire or EMS in an emergency, even when normal phone systems are overloaded or damaged.  We accomplish this by providing  trained volunteers to serve as auxiliary communications operators.   Our motto: "Semper Paratus" means always prepared.

Our other goals include:

  • Supporting  public safety agencies during a major emergency. We will work in cooperation with public and private organizations, including emergency management, police, fire, EMS, the Red Cross and CERT Teams. We will provide the assistance using our equipment or in other ways, as needed.
  • Working together with other groups, such as GMRS and ham radio clubs to develop and maintain emergency communications.
  • Provide free training to members and the public in  emergency preparedness and communications.
  • Develop and test methods for the public, including those with disabilities, to call for emergency help when normal systems are not available.
  • Promote traffic safety by providing various programs and information to the public, including interactive traffic reports.

Activities include:

  • Training Courses and Exercises in emergency
    preparedness and two way radio
  • Two way radio on line forums (AGRC Website)
  • Traffic / Weather Nets
  • Radio Direction Finding (RDF)
  • Skywarn Weather Spotter Nets
  • Assisting and providing communications for events

The AESG also provides resources to educate and inform the public about emergency communications and the use of alternate methods to contact emergency services.

The Community Emergency Network is a cooperative effort between Ham and GMRS radio operators.  For more information, click here .

Interested in Joining?

Anyone interested in radio communications and emergency preparedness is welcome in the AESG.  Our members include both GMRS and Amateur radio operators, retired 911 operators, police officers and firefighters.  Not a radio operator or retired public safety, that's ok.  Those that are willing to obtain an FCC license and become a member of the AGRC are eligible.  We can provide the training.

Those that have training and experience in the military, law enforcement, fire/EMS, search and rescue, or CERT, including those who are retired, are encouraged to use their skills in the AESG.  Currently, there are members with this type of experience and training in the AESG and more are welcome.

There are minimum training requirements in emergency communications and preparedness.  Additional training is also made available in various other subjects, including radio communications, net operations and other topics, as it becomes available.

Emergency communications is an area with a challenging environment and unique situations for radio operators to volunteer in public service.  We act as a trained reserve that activates when we are called.  It is not just a hobby, it is a relevant activity.  The AESG involves not only one organization, but working together with many others, as well.  If you would like to apply your abilities, increase your knowledge and use your communication skills in an organized team effort, then AESG may be for you.
